Eve spends a lot of this book without her badge. I knew it was coming, since this is one of them that I remember pretty well, but it was a shock to see her so broken. Eve built herself up from nothing and made herself a cop. Yeah, she got the right training but the fact that she's a good cop is only partly because of the training. She defines herself by the badge and losing it shattered her into little pieces. Roarke let her be for a few days and then offered her some tough love. Pissed her off, and she was back. It does work out in the end, but still.
